How to take long exposure photographs
Equipment
(You may be interested in starting with our Idiot's Guide)
Firstly you will need equipment such as the following. The only essential item is the first (really!).
- Camera that has the ability to keep the shutter open for as long as you want;
- Shutter cable release;
- Tripod;
- Torch;
- Time keeping piece;
- Light meter;
- Warm covering if you are doing this out of doors.
In some ways, the older the camera the better - or perhaps that is better expressed as - the more primitve the camera the better. A basic camera is also an excellent learning device.
I go into more details about these in the more detailed equipment page.
Technique
The technique you adopt varies on the type of photograph you are taking and the environment you are in. For the sake of simplicity I have broken this down into either indoors or outdoors.
